Freshman Jessica MacMurtrie commutes from Sterling Heights, the fourth largest city in Michigan.

MacMurtrie spends her 20-minute commute listening and singing along to songs on her iPhone.

“Sterling Heights is a bustling city,” said MacMurtrie. “It is pretty interesting.”

Her commute is fairly short as she takes two of the main roadways that surround the city. She uses I-75 and M-59 to get quickly to and from school. The city has had many notable residents– from professional and collegiate athletes to rock and rap musicians.

Sterlingfest, Sterling Heights’ recurring art & jazz fair, is a summer staple and has won numerous awards. MacMurtrie believes that her house is the place to be, though. “Other than that, there are a lot of great cafes to go to,” said MacMurtrie.

Check out the Amici Coffee House, Café Europa, Café Miscela Coffee and Sweets, or Café Mocha. She spends her time in her neighborhood hanging out with her two best friends when she is not working at the Madison Heights Outback Steakhouse.

What is Sterling Heights’ best kept secret? “I guess I am out of the loop on that one,” said MacMurtrie.
