Teach yourself to some cabaret

This weekend Oakland University students can get a little bit of night life right on campus. Varner Studio Theatre will transform from a stage to OU’s own private night club with the up coming “Spotlights,” a night club cabaret act complete with singers, a band and non-alcoholic “mock-tails”.

Six student performers a night will each present a 25-minute set filled with songs from genres like jazz, rock and Broadway. Each performer has chosen their songs very specifically to relate to their own lives and establish a relationship with the audience.

“It’s a distinct art that requires a lot of creativity, honesty, and truth-telling,” said Fred Love, an OU professor who organized the Cabaret performance.

The idea for the event came from Love’s own experience as an entertainer on a cruise ship.

“It teaches the students to be honest and talk about themselves truthfully,” said Love, adding that the real art comes from making a personal bond between performer and audience.

Each of the students has worked for weeks preparing and will perform in two of the four showings.

For students stressing out over upcoming exams and final presentations, this show may be just what the doctor ordered. For others, it might just provide some first-class entertainment.

Love’s advice: “Sit back and enjoy the music.”

The presentation is sponsored by Oakland’s Music, Theatre, and Dance Department. Performances will be in Varner Studio Theatre Friday through Sunday and will begin at 8p.m. Tickets are $8for students and $16 for general admission and are available at the door or at the Varner ticket office.
