A 21-year-old former Oakland University student was arrested Wednesday, July 23 by OUPD for writing a threatening message in a rest room of Van Wagoner House on April 15, 2008

OU Police Chief Sam Lucido said former student Tory Dantuma turned himself in after a prearranged agreement was made.

OUPD is still investigating the threatening messages found on April 12, 2008, which resulted in a 24 hour campus shut down.

Dantuma was arraigned on the felony charge of False Report or Threat of Terrorism at 52-3 District Court. Judge Lisa Asadorian set bond at $1 million.

However, at a hearing on Friday, July 25, before Judge Nancy T. Carniak, Dantuma’s bond was lowered to $5,000. Dantuma, who was not present at the hearing, is being represented by attorney Jeffrey Quas, who argued that his client was not at risk of flight, or a safety risk to others.

While Dantuma was not at the hearing, a group of family and friends were present.

OUPD Lt. Mel Gilroy was present at the hearing and said that the police department was pretty sure early on in its investigation that Dantuma was the person responsible for writing, which referenced the Virginia Tech shooting from April 2007.

Gilroy also said that OUPD “did not feel the threats were credible,” and he was not concerned that Dantuma constituted any risk to the community while he was being investigated.

The investigation was conducted internally by OUPD with additional help from Michigan State Police.

“It was a complex investigation,” Lucido said.

“I am pleased that we were able to close the case,” Lucido said. “We want the Oakland community to know that Oakland remains a very safe place.”
