Apatow effect reaches ‘Adventureland’

In the 1990s we partied with Wayne Campbell and Garth in “Wayne’s World,” hit the club scene with Steve and Doug Butabi in “A Night at the Roxbury,” and schmoozed with Leon Phelps in “The Ladies Man.”
“Saturday Night Live” pumped life into the film careers of Mike Meyers, Dana Carvey, Will Ferrell, Chris Kattan and Tim Meadows by transitioning their “SNL” characters to the big screen. It was a solid formula for comedic success. But it’s not the 1990s anymore, and while “SNL” has tried rebuilding their once-can’t-miss comedic reputation, one cast member has found a new formula to follow: The Judd Apatow one. Having appeared in “Knocked Up,” “Superbad,” “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and “Pineapple Express,” Bill Hader is no newbie to silver screen hilarity.
The Apatow effect will most likely allow Hader a smooth transition in the upcoming nostalgic piece “Adventureland.” Having worked with directed Greg Mottola on “Superbad” probably won’t hurt either.
The film centers on a recent 1987 college grad (Jesse Eisenberg) who is forced to get a summer job at an amusement park. Hader and “SNL” buddy Kristen Wiig join the cast along with super hottie Ryan Reynolds and “Twilight” star Kristen Stewart. It may be no “Superbad” but our guess is that “SNL” stars may make “Adventureland” worth the $10 ticket. Find out for yourself when “Adventureland” hits theaters April 3.
