Faculty bargaining team walks out on negotiations
For the second time in the same day, the Oakland University chapter of American Association of University Professors union bargaining team walked out on negotiations with Oakland University’s bargaining team, setting the stage for a hearing in front of Oakland County Circuit Judge Edward Sosnick on Wednesday morning and prompting the university to cancel a fourth consecutive day of classes.
Earlier on Tuesday, the AAUP bargainers walked out of a marathon bargaining session with Oakland University, prompting university officials to seek a court order demanding the striking professors return to work. Judge Sosnick instructed the two sides to bargain through the night until an agreement was reached. Failing that, the two sides would go before Judge Sosnick to present their respective cases in a dispute that has so far cost Oakland University students four days of classes and immeasurable inconvenience and uncertainty. The union bargaining team ignored Judge Sosnick’s order and walked out of a bargaining session that university officials hoped would bring an end to the faculty’s illegal strike.
At this time, no further bargaining sessions are scheduled.
