Greek Week unites fraternities and sororities in friendly competition
As the semester comes to an end, Greek Week begins. Greek Week is a weeklong event in which members of fraternities and sororities come together on teams and compete in an event each day.
This year’s Greek Week was from March 28 through April 1.
Every year there are new teams and a new philanthropy to support. The funds from this year’s events went to support The Rainbow Connection.
According to their website, “The mission of The Rainbow Connection is to make dreams come true for Michigan children with life-threatening illnesses and provide support services to the wish families.”
One of the values of The Rainbow Connection is, “We believe in collaboration and partnering with other groups.”
This closely correlates to how the members of the Greek community came together for the week to help raise money for a great cause.
The teams this year were named for different sports and compiled of different sororities and fraternities. The team names included the Basketball Team, the Soccer Team, the Baseball Team, the Swimming Team and the Hockey Team.
Greek Week started off with new events this year including the tug-of-war and chariot races. This event took place on Greek Row.
Day two consisted of Penny Wars and a Fleece and Thank You event. All of the money raised from Penny Wars went to The Rainbow Connection and all 93 of the fleece tie blankets went to Children’s Hospitals for children battling life-threatening illnesses.
On day three, Greek Council worked with the Student Program Board to host a movie night. The council showed the film “Neighbors.” The movie shows Greeks in a negative stereotype but Oakland University Greeks wanted to show how they defy the stereotype.
Andres Morales, president of Oakland University’s Greek Council, hosted a discussion panel following the film and discussed the positive views of Greek Life that most people do not see portrayed in the media.
On Thursday, the Greeks hosted a Dance-Off. After only one week of choreographing and practicing their dances, the teams got on stage. The Basketball Team incorporated High School Musical’s “Get Your Head in the Game” while the Swimming Team brought their flip-flops, sunblock and leis.
Lastly, there was a Friday night flag football game accompanied by a tailgate. A member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity DJ-ed the event while Maria Chura, member of Alpha Sigma Tau sorority, updated the crowd on scores.
The Greek Week winner was the Swimming Team compiled of Alpha Delta Pi, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Zeta Sigma Chi and Kappa Alpha Psi. The winner was announced at the CSA awards on Monday April 11.
