Special dance events running May 8 at DIA
Dance your way into the Detroit Institute of Arts this Sunday, May 8 for a fun-filled adventure into the world of American dance art from the years of 1830 to 1960. The event will feature several activities for patrons of all ages.
According to the DIA’s website, the first special event of the day is a performance of “The Sleeping Beauty” ballet in the Great Hall at 11 a.m. This is a dance class inviting all ages and skill levels to come and learn about the enchanting ballet and its several stylistic qualities.
The second event is “Dance Now Detroit” at the Rivera Court at 12:30 p.m., which will demonstrate the various dance styles present and being developed in the Detroit area. The event will be followed by “Canvas to Dance: Lisa Lamarre and Dancers” at 2 p.m., a performance inspired by the works of Andy Warhol.
At 3 p.m., attendees will enjoy the “Detroit Revival Project” at Rivera Court, featuring contemporary performances by metro-Detroit located studios ARTLAB J and DDCdances in collaboration with contemporary music ensemble ConTempus.
The Dance! American Art 1830-1960 exhibit runs until June 12 and costs $10 for adults tri-county residents and $5 for tri-county children under 17. The exhibit is free on Fridays with reservations.
