Director comments on Varner’s Unbounded Edge

On Saturday, Feb. 12, Varner presented another segment of the Professional Artist Series, Unbounded Edge.Gregory Patterson, the dance program director, shared his thoughts about the show with the Oakland Post. The company will perform in New York on June 5.

How did you feel the performance on Saturday went?

Patterson: The concert was received really well. It was a unique concert that offered a lot of variety for its audience.

What do you believe attracts people to Unbounded Edge?

Patterson: What attracted the audience was the presentation of four Michigan dance companies (Patterson Rhythm Pace Dance Company, Mise En Place Dance, Shifting Sol and Agua Dulce Theatre) performing together on one stage. This presented the audience with a selection of unique and interesting work that everyone related to in some way or another.

Another attraction is purely the quality of the dancers. These dancers are strong technicians and virtuosic movers.

What are the biggest strengths of the group?

Patterson: My dance company, Patterson Rhythm Pace Dance Company, is known for its modern-jazz style of movement. I believe my audience is attracted to the companies works that range from contemporary to classical jazz.

Will there be another performance before you take unbounded edge to NYC?

Patterson: The companies may perform together again next year, however this concert (Unbounded Edge) was presented in NY last June, and while each company does hope to present again in the near future it will most likely not be the same concert.

What has been the reaction been like to the performance on Saturday here at OU?

Patterson: The biggest reaction comes from our dance majors who are thrilled to see performances by exciting dance companies, in particular companies directed by their professors. It is one of the main reasons we produce these shows, to give our students great experiences and creative stimulation. There is also nice feedback from other colleagues and community supporters. Having these concerts helps to build relationships and rapport amongst the community.
