Oakland men’s basketball team demolishes Spring Arbor
In the third exhibition game of the pre-season, the Oakland University men’s basketball team obliterated Spring Arbor on Wednesday night in the O’Rena 94-55.
After being out for the entire season last year due to a torn ACL, Blake Cushingberry returned to form and scored 9 points, all from the three-point line.
“It feels good to be out on the court and playing again,” Cushingberry said. “I’m just picking up roles that were left over from last year.”
“He’s a veteran,” Men’s Coach Greg Kampe said. “He’s been there. He’s won championships. He missed a year. I’m sure he was tentative about his conditioning and all that stuff, but shooting a jump shot, he’ll never be tentative about that.”
Another Oakland player who made O’Rena debut was Corey Petros, scoring 8 points and 10 total rebound, 8 of those being offensive rebounds, impressing the coaching staff.
“I think Petros showed everybody what we’ve been saying about him that he has the chance to be the next great big at Oakland,” Kampe said.
One of the concerns going in to the season was rebounding but Oakland out-rebounded Spring Arbor 46-24.
“If you can’t do it against a team like (Spring Arbor), you’re not going to be able to do it against a good team,” Kampe said.
Guard Laval Lucas-Perry went 3-4 from the three-point line, finishing with 15 points, and Reggie Hamilton with 13 points.
The Golden Grizzlies are now 9-0 against the Cougars overall.
Because of Republican debate, the Golden Grizzlies face University of Windsor in their final exhibition game at Rochester Adams High School on Nov. 8.
Oakland will open up the 2011-12 season against Alabama on Nov. 14 in Tuscaloosa.
