Student Program Board presents Step Afrika!

For the first time ever, Oakland University’s Student Program Board presented Step Afrika! Nov 28. in the Banquet Rooms of the Oakland Center.

Step Afrika! is traveling step group that recently performed at the White House for President Barack Obama.

“We wanted to bring something new and different to the university,” Dezarea Wade, diversity director of SPB, said. “I’m so glad to see students of all ages rushing in to see it.”

The performance consisted of various stepping routines, a Zulu Tribe rain dance and a gumboot beat.

Stepping is a form of percussive dance in which the participant’s entire body is used as an instrument to produce rhythms and sounds through a mixture of footsteps, spoken word and hand claps.

“The performance was a good way to bring a whole different culture on campus,” said Katie Bumhoffer, president of Residence Hall Association, said. “It’s a great way to get the student body to come out and mingle.”
