OUPD to send out campus-wide text messaging alert

On Nov. 13 at 1 p.m., the Oakland University Police Department will conduct a test for their emergency text messaging alert system.

“In the event of any crisis situation, information will reach you automatically through most of our communication methods. To fully utilize our most efficient method, however, we need your help,” Samuel Lucido, chief of the OU Police Department, said in an email.

Registered users will receive this text message alert and should report should report this to [email protected], according to Lucido.

Lucido said these text message alerts will only be broadcasted when it is determined there is an imminent threat of danger to people on campus, or in the event of a university closure or campus-wide cancellation of classes. He said the one exception is when this test is conducted each semester.

As a reminder, Lucido said returning students who have not had an active university email account for more than 12 months must re-register to receive text alerts. He also said any subscriber who has changed their cell phone number since they registered must update their contact information online. Lucido said OUPD has established a series of emergency communication methods and procedures, and he encouraged the OU community to learn more about by visiting www.oakland.edu/ready
