Student org discusses healthier lifestyle at Green Living Conference

The student organization Sustaining Our Planet Earth brought healthy initiatives to the Oakland Center Gold Rooms March 4. At their Green Living Conference, the members of SOPE and their guests shared ideas and talked about local environmental concerns, as well as overall wellness tips and benefits.

The Sierra Club of Michigan, which supports clean energy, water and wildlife, highlighted the green acts they advocate. They encouraged students to make a difference within their community.

The members’ encouragement was welcomed among the audience, made up mostly of students who wish to help build a clean future. The Michigan chapter has conservation priorities which focus on the legacy they believe every child should inherit, according to its website.

A free yoga class was offered to those who registered. Only a few students attended, but they made the most of it by getting tips for de-stressing and relaxation. As the event came to a close, games and an arts and crafts project were offered using bits of recycled material. Prizes were given out to the winners.

Around 3 p.m., Professor Marilyn Moradjian led a discussion about the way veganism affects her life and how to make changes toward a healthier diet.

“A vegan diet has a bad stigma,” said Maria Willett, a member of SOPE. “It’s strict, but people don’t know it just means eating healthier.”

Moradjian attempted to clear up the stigma, telling students that the payoff of a more energetic and natural life is well worth the discipline.
