Screenshots — Sunrise over Oakland

No, college didn’t look at all like I pictured it. Less like something on the front of an Ivy League
university brochure, more like a sub-par business complex. No ivy-clad, 100 year-old buildings of
brilliant Gothic architecture, vaulted hallways with wooden arches. Our sprawling, (mostly) grassy
lawns, which may harbor students studying under the shade of the trees or slack-lining between them in the spring, turn into a desolate arctic tundra during the winter. The pale brick and mortar campus
seems to disappear into the abysmal overcast gray at even the slightest flurry.
Alas, if you look closely, keep your mind open, camera ready and wake up early enough Oakland may have a few surprises in store. Rachel Reardon, a sophomore French major, managed to perfectly capture a wildly stunning sunrise from on top of SEB building – one of thoselittle secrets of campus that offers a great view a few miles out in each direction. I’m not sure which class begins early enough to offer such a display, but Rachel’s capture of colors magnificently stratified across the horizon above Kresge is a sight that is surely a rare gem and a breathtaking escape from dismal campus life.
