Is print the Hubble of news media?

By Colleen Miller

The Oakland Post ran the Associated Press story in the June issue about the possibility of a new daily print newspaper in Detroit, and a couple reactions from campus. We don’t pay the price to put AP stories online, but digitaljournal.com ran a similar one. As a journalism major, my initial reaction was pure excitement, and I literally skipped through the office.

Journalists aren’t the only ones with reason to be concerned about whether their careers, as they know them, will exist in the future, but for a bit, I really thought that The Post might be the last print newspaper I would be able to work for. It’s like being one of the astronauts that just went up to fix Hubble for the last time. We’re figuring out how to deliver the news in new ways while not being too quick to write off what’s been working for so long, but we know that in 10 years everything is going to be different. News of, granted, it’s two old guys, starting up a new newspaper for, granted, old people, makes me hopeful that we’re not on our last mission.

Even if print is a dinosaur, there are so many opportunities popping up for young journalists. Like MLive.com setting up a metro Detroit team and the Free Press’ launch of Detroit.Metromix.com just one year ago.
