Some student organizations are
political. Some of these are a general discussion, like the Forum for
American Political Enlightenment, and others are for more specific
political causes, like Students for Life and US Campaign for Burma.
Forum for American Political
Enlightenment
Goal: enlighten students on issues
affecting American politics today
Activities: provide a way to present
academic and constructive data/evidence and discussions to provide
solutions to modern political issues
Meetings: 5:30 p.m. on the first and
third Thursday of every month, and again on the second and
fourth

Students for Life
Goal: spreading awareness about the
dignity of each unborn child and the negative effects of abortion on
women’s physical and emotional health

US Campaign for Burma
Goal: promote a grassroots awareness
about the human rights and humanitarian crisis going on in the
military ruled South East Asian nation of Burma (Myanmar) on
Oakland’s campus. Secondarily, the club will also try to work on
making students on campus aware about human rights all over the
world.
Activities: plan events such as movie
screenings, fundraisers, work with other clubs/organizations on and
off campus and U.S Campaign For Burma’s headquarters in Washington
D.C/other NGOs (Amnesty International) to get the message out about
the situation in Burma

religion.
Muslim Student Association
Goal: bettering the university campus
and increasing the understanding of Islam and Muslims on campus
Activities: ast-a-thons, Islam
Awareness Week, Game Night, Q and A Sessions, organizing potential
MSA T-shirts, movie nights, and more

InterVarsity Christian Fellowship
Goal: reate a welcoming, vibrant
community for students, faculty, and staff in which Christ followers
and God-seekers alike can experience personal growth through
fellowship, prayer events, Bible studies, and service opportunities
Activities: Bible studies and weekly
meetings with worship and dynamic speakers to service opportunities,
conferences in and out of state, and many special events throughout
the year

from 4:30-6pm: Picnic between the lake and the OC. Free food will be
provided, we will also be playing Frisbee and other games. Rain
location is Lake Superior B in the basement of the OC.

Arab American Student Association
Goal: earning more about the middle
east as a whole. We include every middle eastern country and we are
very open to learning. You don’t have to be middle eastern to join
AASO.

Asian American Association
Goal: connecting students culturally,
hanging out, show people our talents, or experiencing new things
Activities: main event is to put up a
talent/culture show, other events may range from movies, eat out,
putting up a show, social mixers, volunteering opportunities, etc.

German Club
Goal: celebrating everything German —
the food, the culture, the language, etc.

where we speak German, watch German movies, play German games, etc.,

Goal: give students the chance to share
their interest in France and the French culture and the opportunity
to socialize with other students who share this interest
Activities: planning on having meetings
and French tables around the OC for members to communicate and share
their love for French culture, and take members to museums and French
cafes to better understand French culture

fraternities, honor societies or clubs based on a major.
Anthropology Club
Goal: bring students and aspects of
Anthropology together. This involves other cultures and how we
interact with them.
Activities: often have lectures or
events in which we will have someone come in and talk to us about
specific topics in anthropology, art history, or anything else we can
deem relevant to the club

Sociology Club
Goal: promoting awareness of many
different social problems, such as facism, feminism and the like.
Dedicated to serving our community, by contributing in any way
possible
Activities: look for different social
problems that may arise and a a group work together in solving these
problems, and work with Habitat for Humanity, Oakland University

Alpha Phi Omega
Goal: co-ed community service fraternity that incorporates leadership, friendship and service
Activities:
attend weekly Sunday meetings, attend events on campus for fellowship,
work with OU Cares on campus, Gleaners Food Bank, and Connor Soup
Kitchen, etc.

RED COW
Goal:
strives rise the awareness of the college community about social and
political issues through academic involvement, campus involvement and
community service
Activities: monthly community service events, we will be hosting study
nights twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays in the Oakland Center by
the food court starting Sept. 14

CRY (Child Rights and You)
Goal: ensure rights to all
categories of children, who could be street children, children bonded
in labor, children of commercial sex workers, physically and mentally
challenged children and children in juvenile institutions, or even
children in privileged homes

One student organization is run by elected student leaders to service the students.
Oakland University Student Congress
Goal: represent the
student body and increase pride and unity on campus through dynamic
leadership, a commitment to diversity, and an ongoing devotion to the
quality of university life
Activities: aim to meet the needs and address the concerns of our
fellow students and encourage students to voice their ideas to help us
create the best possible “Oakland experience”

Some student organizations are based on an activity, like dancing or singing.
Street Dance Association
Goal: exhibits and promotes the dance forms of genuine Hip Hop culture
including (but not limited to) Bboying, Popping, Locking, and Funk
Styles and their respective culture(s) as well as teach their
incorporated skills, ideas, history, and politics to OU’s community
Activities: Dance workshops, sessions and special events will happen periodically

Special Event: SDA is sponsoring/helping with a competitive
breakdancing event called Ride the Boogie on Saturday, September 5th at
the Troy Dance Studio. There will be food and drinks for sale.
OU Gold Vibrations
Goal: new co-ed a cappella group on campus singing all kinds of popular
music aims to be completely student-run by arranging own music,
organizing concerts, student-run rehearsals, etc
Activities:
plan on having rehearsals two times a week, prepare for concerts,
community events, and someday hopefully to compete in the ICCA National
A Cappella Competition

Event: holding auditions on Thursday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. Any student
interested in auditioning can sign up for a 10 minute time slot at
their table at Grizzfest (held in the Oakland Center from 11am-1pm on
Wednesday September 8th) or outside the audition room on audition day.

Some student organizations are media.
Goal: provide members with the knowledge of all the different facets of television production
Activities:
produce television shows for OU’s television channel, OUTV; members
can write, produce, direct, and edit television shows, as producers,
actors, hosts, and/or reporters

WXOU radio station “The Grizz”
Goal: the student-run radio station of OU, providing shows on music, news and commentaries
