Oakland men’s basketball defeats Centenary 75-64 Thursday night

The Golden Grizzlies men’s basketball team survived a scare against Centenary College Thursday night, rallying from a double-digit first half deficit to win 75-64 at the O’Rena.

Behind the strength of Derick Nelson’s season-high 28 points, OU was able to improve to 11-1 in Summit League play.

Point guard Johnathon Jones had a big night, contributing eight points, a season-high 13 assists, six rebounds and four steals.

“It looked like it was going to be one of those long nights where you walk out of here shaking your head and wondering how you lost,” head coach Greg Kampe said. “But these two guys (Nelson and Jones) stood up and made sure that didn’t happen. That’s the difference and that’s why we’re where we’re at.”

Both teams shot below 40 percent on the evening, but the Grizzlies did knock down nine 3-pointers.

Oakland will return to action Saturday in its Homecoming game against rival Oral Roberts.
