Men’s basketball team drop to 0-2 after loss at Arkansas

In second match-up of the four game road trip, the Oakland University men’s basketball team couldn’t match the speed of a young Arkansas team, resulting in a 91-68 loss.

Oakland’s shots in the first 11 minutes went cold, shooting 5-20 allowing the Razorbacks to take advantage by creating an 18 point lead.

After falling into a 28 point first-half deficit, the second largest since 2000 against Michigan State, the Golden Grizzlies started the second half with two three-pointers from Reggie Hamilton and one from Travis Bader to cut the Arkansas lead, but it wasn’t enough to take over.

Junior Arkansas guard Marshawn Powell was 8 for 8 at the end of the half and scored a team-high 20 points.

Not helping the Golden Grizzlies cause was Arkansas scoring 17 points off turnovers in the first half and shooting 53 percent versus Oakland’s 34 percent overall.

Oakland out scored Arkansas in the second half 41-36, but the first half mistakes offset the performance.

Sophmore Travis Bader shot a career-high seven three-pointers, and led the game with 21 points. Junior Drew Valentine finished with his fifth career double-double, 13 points and 10 rebounds.

In his second career start, Redshirt freshman Corey Petros finished with game-high 14 rebounds and contributed Oakland to out-rebound the Razorbacks 39-35.

OU falls to 0-2 all-time against Arkansas and 1-5 overall against Southeast Conference teams.

The Golden Grizzlies travel to Grambling State on Saturday, Nov. 19.
