Wear the right gear during the fall and winter months

Looking good probably isn’t your first concern while working out, but it is good to wear the right type clothing for it.

It’s important to feel comfortable in the clothes you wear while getting fit.

As simple as you’d think it would be to pick out clothes to get all sweaty in, I have seen some poor choices. First off, I’d like to point out that it just sounds uncomfortable to go running in jean shorts let alone actually wear them. Secondly to the women, have you ever heard of a sports bra? Use them. I have known several women who don’t… please don’t be one of them.

With fall and winter coming, it’s important to dress weather-appropriate, especially while doing physical activity outside.  It’s easy to think we need to bundle up to go outside in the winter, however when exercising outdoors, it’s a bit different.

According to an article by the Mayo Clinic Staff,  “dressing in layers, protecting your hands and feet and paying attention to the forecast can help you stay safe and warm while exercising outdoors in cold weather.”

While exercising, your body energizes and gives off heat, which makes you sweat. The sweat gets your clothes damp which can then make your body feel damp and uncomfortable. When you take a break to cool off, you may feel a bit chilly when the sweat dries. This is when the layering comes into play.

In an article for Livestrong.com, written by Alex O’Meara, he gives tips on the different levels of layering starting with the base layer, to the extremities.

I have tried a few brands, but nothing compares (in my opinion) to Under Armour’s Cold Gear line of long sleeved shirts, pants, gloves and more.  Although the material may appear thin, it really does keep your body warmer in the winter without it being so heavy.

I find them perfect for layering in the winter months. After all, their clothing is designed to help regulate body temperature and staying dry while working out.

As for the fall season, my favorite is Nike capris. (Nike is my all-time favorite sports apparel, so I’m letting you know now they will be mentioned many times throughout my blogs).

When biking, walking, or doing any other physical activity, I have found Nike’s Legend Slim Fit Capris to be the best, but go with what is most comfortable for you and your body type.

Although Under Armour and Nike can be on the expensive side, here’s a tip. Birch Run Premium Outlets in Birch Run, Michigan, always has good deals on Under Armour and Nike as items are never fully priced. I find them to be a bit cheaper than Great Lakes Crossing in Auburn Hills, even.

Also remember it gets darker during the fall and winter months. Before we know it, it will be dark at 6 p.m.  Not everyone can get their workout in during the morning and go in the evening. If you are one of these people, please remember to wear some sort of reflector so others can see you.

For cyclists, you may be interested in investing in a Safety Light to clip on your bike. For those who walk or run at night, you can either clip on a safety light like attached to a bike, or wear a reflector vest or light up armband. In the end, it may be worth getting one of these. You don’t want to take the risk.
