Women’s basketball falls to IUPUI 59-37 Thursday

Oakland University women’s basketball fell to IUPUI at The Jungle 59-37 Thursday. Freshman guard Elena Popkey recorded the first double-double of her career as a Grizzlie with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Freshman forward Sinclair Russell finished the game with nine rebounds while freshman forward Olivia Nash collected eight rebounds and five points.

Oakland (9-18, 3-12 Summit) finished the first half shooting 24 percent (6-25) while IUPUI (18-10, 11-4 Summit) shot 43.3 percent (13-30).

OU’s offense struggled early as they went without a field goal for the first 10:51 of the game. They managed to keep the game within distance courtesy of the free throw line and trailed 28-19 at halftime.

The Grizzlies shot just 1-15 beyond the arc, the lone 3-pointer coming from Popkey in the second half. IUPUI did not fare much better, going 2-11 from long range.

Freshman forward Nevena Markovic scored 14 points and finished with five blocks and six rebounds for IUPUI. The Jaguars out rebounded the Grizzlies 48-39. Both teams turned the ball over 20 times.

Oakland will finish up the regular season on the road against Western Illinois March 2.
