Oakland women’s basketball suffers fifth loss in a row, loses 83-48 against South Dakota State

The Oakland University women’s basketball fell to South Dakota State 83-48 at Frost Arena Saturday.

Freshman forward Olivia Nash finished with 14 points and seven rebounds. Junior guard Victoria Lipscomb added 11 points and seven rebounds.

South Dakota State (19-6,11-1 Summit) got off to a 26-8 lead over Oakland (8-15, 2-9 Summit) in the first half. SDSU later went on a 15-6 run to extend its lead to 43-17.

Despite cutting a 26-point lead down to 19 points, Oakland was outscored 45-26 in the first half. South Dakota State had the edge in rebounding, grabbing 26 boards in the first compared to Oakland’s 12 rebounds.

The Grizzlies looked to get momentum on their side at the start of the second half, but the Jackrabbits had other plans.

South Dakota State kept its steady lead, including a 15-4 run that made it 76-36 with just under six minutes remaining. The 40-point lead for SDSU was the largest deficit in the game.

Oakland was able to hold South Dakota State without a field goal for the final 3:42 of the game, but the lead was already too much to overcome as they were defeated 83-48.

The Grizzlies return home to the O’rena where they will begin a three-game home stand. Oakland will host South Dakota Feb. 14 at 6:30 p.m.
