Oakland finishes regular season with 64-53 loss at WIU Saturday

Oakland University women’s basketball closed out its season with a 64-53 loss against Western Illinois at Waste Management Court Saturday.

Freshman forwards Olivia Nash and Sinclair Russell led the Grizzlies with double-digit scoring. Nash finished with 15 points while Russell scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds.

Oakland (9-19, 3-13 Summit) shot 38.5 percent (10-26) in the first half. Western Illinois (14-15, 7-9 Summit) were 10-35 from the field, shooting 28.6 percent.

The Grizzlies trailed by just two points at halftime, 28-26. WIU out rebounded Oakland in the first half 23-16.

Junior guard Victoria Lipscomb scored eight points in the second half, bringing Oakland within one point with 12:02 left in the game on a jumper that made it 43-42.

The Grizzlies were unable to score in the final 4:52 of the game after trailing by two with less than five minutes to play.

WIU shot 43.8 percent (14-32) in the second half while Oakland shot 34.4 percent (11-32). The Grizzlies were perfect at the free throw line for the entire game. Western Illinois had the edge beyond the arc, going 9-26 from long range while Oakland was 5-15.

Freshman guard Elena Popkey contributed for the Grizzlies with nine points and four rebounds. Junior guard Elizabeth Hamlet finished with a career-high six assists.

Senior guard Saule Kontautaite scored a game-high 20 points for Western Illinois while teammate freshman forward Ashley Luke had a double-double, scoring 11 points with 13 rebounds.

With the regular season coming to an end, Oakland is now set to head to The Summit League Tournament in Sioux Falls as the No. 8 seed. They will take on top-seeded South Dakota State March 9 at 1 p.m.
