TSA to allow pocket knives at airports
While pocket knives are prohibited at Michigan airports, the Transportation Security Administration will allow them through security checkpoints and into airline cabins, beginning April 25.
According to www.tsa.gov, a knife is allowed if the blade is no longer than 2.36 inches (6 centimeters) in length, blade width is no more than 1/2 inch at its widest point, the knife does not have a locking or fixed blade and if the knife does not have a molded grip.
Michigan’s Attorney General’s office said the ban will be implemented regardless of the TSA change. However, TSA agents will not make travelers surrender pocket knives at the security checkpoint, even at Michigan airports, according to David Castelveter, administration spokesman.
“The checkpoint is our jurisdiction. We still have the authority under federal law to allow these changes to go into effect,” Castelveter said.
Michael Conway, spokesman for the Detroit Metropolitan Airport, said airport police will continue to enforce the provision when violations come to their attention.
The Transportation Security Administration will also allow travelers to bring golf clubs and hockey sticks into airline cabins for the first time since 2001.
