Athletic Communication Department searches for new assistant director

With the recent absence of Scott Dunford, assistant director of athletic communication, it is brought upon Scott MacDonald, director of the athletic communication department, to fill the position quickly.  However, the spot is to be filled by the candidate that is the most experienced and fits the occupation thoroughly.

“I hope to fill the position sometime in June — but I will not hire anyone unless I know they are a perfect fit for Oakland,” MacDonald said.

“With the announcement of the Horizon League, we will need someone who not only has tremendous experience in collegiate athletic communication but has experience with video and editing,”  MacDonald said.

This way the department can improve in those areas and accommodate the move to the Horizon League Network.  The candidate must have a bachelor’s degree in communication, journalism or a related field with a minimum of three years of athletic communications and sports information experience at the collegiate level.

“The candidate must also be able to design, write and produce web guides, news releases and other printed material; Compile statistics and maintain records; Report statistics and information to The Summit League (Horizon League in 2013-14) and NCAA offices; Nominate and promote student-athletes for conference, regional and All-America honors,” MacDonald said.

While the position still remains to be absent at the time, there is a need for the remaining of the staff to put forth more effort to cover the position.

“It has extended my staff to much more hours. With a person down, I have had to rely on myself and other casual part-time employees, along with my graduate assistant to pick up the slack,” MacDonald said during the explanation of the impact that the unfilled position has had on the department.

With the compilation of work put upon MacDonald, along with the other employees within the athletic communications department, finding a replacement for Dunford is of utmost importance and therefore well in process.

“We have narrowed the search down to some top candidates. I cannot provide who as we have not made a final decision on who we are going to hire at this point,”  MacDonald said.
