On the weekend of Oct. 13, fans flocked to movie theaters to watch “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” after Ticketmaster prevented many from seeing Swift live. A movie release seems like the perfect answer to many who couldn’t experience the concert live. Maybe she’s a mastermind.
“I can’t thank you enough for wanting to see this film that so vividly captures my favorite adventure I’ve been part of, ” Swift said in an Instagram post highlighting the premiere.
After surprising everyone with an early showing, Swift’s movie premiered on Oct. 12. That day, ticket purchases grossed $2.8 million in sales. Best believe she’s still bejeweled with those impressive numbers.
Movie theaters are experiencing their second trend of the year. This summer, “Barbienhiemer” became a nationwide event — theaters saw a similar turnout for Swift’s movie. Both events included fan participation in extravagant-themed costumes.
Some fan-favorite songs were missing from the show, including “cardigan” and “Wildest Dreams.” However, given the film’s extended run-time, it makes sense that some songs had to be cut.
Surprise songs included “Our Song” and “You’re on Your Own, Kid.” With the excitement of anticipating which songs Swift would choose, fans became obsessed with hearing their favorite songs not already on the setlist. These two songs are probably the most well-known surprise songs, making them a logical choice for theaters.
Regarding “Taylor-Economics,” her financial successes are straight out of your “Wildest Dreams.” As one of the major players in the music industry, ticket sales for both live and recorded performances have brought in major bucks for her. Economic predictions theorize that Swift’s worldwide gross ticket sales will surpass $1 billion.
It seems Swift may be setting a new trend with in-theater tour releases, as Beyoncé just announced a similar plan.
“Be careful what you ask for, ‘cause I might just comply,” Beyoncé shared in a recent Instagram post announcing the movie release of her “Renaissance” Tour.
Beyonce has seen massive sales following this announcement — AMC has already sold $7 million in tickets for its release. The movie is set to debut in theaters on Dec. 1.
Beyoncé and Swift were also spotted together at the Era’s movie premiere — the two leading music industry ladies have formed an alliance. Talk about a power duo!
“She’s been a guiding light throughout my career, and the fact that she showed up tonight was like an actual fairy tale,” Swift said as she posed with Beyoncé in a photo.
It seems Swift’s movie will be the first of many recorded concerts to hit movie theaters. Will this become a popular trend that other musicians will follow? All signs point to yes.
In addition to the extra income generated by movie releases, creatives will be satisfied knowing that increased accessibility comes with this. Those with financial or geographical obstacles preventing them from attending concerts will enjoy a similar experience.
