Summer is a time that holds multiple meanings for people throughout life. As a child, it can mean a vacation from school. As an adult, summer can merely feel like a season between spring and fall.
It may seem like the magic of summer ends once a student receives their diploma, but it doesn’t have to. There is still plenty of fun during the summer season to relish as an adult.
Below is a list of activities around the Oakland University community to enjoy during the dog days of summer.
OU’s Summer Carillon Concert Series
Otherwise known as “Six Fridays at 6,” OU’s Summer Carillon Concert Series asks visitors to gather around Elliot Tower with their lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy a free concert provided by the sounds of the towers’ 49 fully-chromatic bells.
The concert series brings carillonneurs from around the world — including New York City and Germany — to Elliot Tower. The final four concerts in the series will take place on July 21, July 28, August 4 and August 11 at 6 p.m.
Once the home of OU’s founder Matilda Dodge Wilson, Meadow Brook Hall hosts an abundance of events during the summer — some at a discounted rate for OU students and faculty.
Events include concerts, yoga, twilight tours and an outdoor art show. They also offer guided and self-guided tours Friday-Monday from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Those interested in frequenting the estate can become Meadow Brook members, with packages beginning at $50.
Residing on OU’s campus, Meadow Brook Amphitheatre is a historic venue for various concerts and shows throughout the summer.
This year’s lineup includes Jason Mraz on July 29, Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats on Aug. 4, The Beach Boys on Aug. 20 and The Postal Service & Death Cab for Cutie on Sept. 17.

Friday Nights Music Series at Riverside Park
Riverside Park in downtown Auburn Hills has a free concert at their Knight Amphitheater weekly, only a few miles from OU’s campus.
Performers include local bands such as The Look, Mainstreet Soul, Jovi — a Bon Jovi tribute band — American Ages, Merge and Family Tradition.
From July 21 until Aug. 25, concerts will occur every Friday from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.
‘The Friends Experience: The One Near Detroit’
Located at Great Lakes Crossing Outlets, fans of the 90’s sitcom “Friends” can experience the show in a new way at this interactive exhibit now through Sept. 24.
Created by Warner Bros and Original X Productions, “The Friends Experience” features 12 set recreations, allowing visitors to visit places from the “Friends” universe, such as Monica and Rachel’s kitchen and Central Perk.
Tickets are $33 per adult and $30 for students with a valid ID. Open Wednesdays through Sundays, the experience also features a gift shop open to both ticked and non-ticketed guests.
During a time when blockbusters like “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie” are in theaters, AMC Stubs Insider, Premiere and A-List members can enjoy a trip to the movies for only $5 every Tuesday.
Nicknamed “Discount Tuesdays,” members can also purchase a small popcorn and drink for the same price.
AMC Stubs Insider memberships are free, Premiere costs $15 annually and A-List prices start at $19.95 monthly.
