Sporting blitz for the week of April 30

Track and Field

The Oakland University men and women’s track and field team has been busy the last few weeks. David Koponen was named the Horizon League men’s runner of the week last Tuesday after posting a 1:58.75 in the 800-meter run which is the fastest time in the league this season.

The team also participated in the Gina Relays in Hillsdale, Michigan. Andrew Bowman and Miranda Haas posted personal bests in the steeplechase while Aaron Davis finished the 100-meter dash in 10.97 seconds. Oakland will wrap up the spring season at the Horizon League Championships in Youngstown, Ohio from May 2-4.

Softball

The OU women’s softball team is wrapping up their season over the next few weeks. Two home games were cancelled last week due to inclement weather. The team posted a 1-0 victory against Cleveland state and then took two out of three games from Youngstown State.

Looking ahead, Oakland will battle Detroit (weather permitting) in a double header on Tuesday and then Eastern Michigan on Wednesday of this week. The team will then play a weekend series against UIC to conclude the regular season.

Golf

Both the men and women’s golf teams wrapped up their respective seasons in Florida last weekend at the Mission Inn Resort, host of the Horizon League Championship. Evan Bowser of the men’s team posted a final round score of 73 and earned all-tournament honors and finishing fourth overall. The Grizzlies men’s team managed to finish seventh.

The women’s team had a great outing, finishing as the runner up in their inaugural Horizon League season. Danielle Crilley and Donna Fiscelli led the Grizzlies with scores of 234 overall and tied for fourth place individually. Both teams are looking to continue their success next season.

Baseball

The Golden Grizzlies men’s baseball team is looking to gain some positive momentum as they wrap up their first season in the Horizon League. Oakland currently sits in sixth place in the Horizon League standings with an overall record of 7-24 and a conference record of 2-13.

The team is scheduled for a matchup on Tuesday against Michigan and then will return home for a Wednesday game against CMU. The Grizzlies will then close out the season with series against Valparaiso, Milwaukee and UIC.
