Intercollegiate Sports Roundup

Classes are starting, games are planned and stands are filling.

As COVID-19 cases continue to level out and decrease, life gradually returns to post-COVID-19 normalcy, which means sports games are returning in full swing. Starting up the fall season are football, men and women’s soccer, volleyball and basketball.

As we head into week three of college sports, week two had a wild ride across the teams.

Monday, Sept. 6th in East Lansing, Michigan State University (MSU) men’s soccer team lost 3-0 to Bowling Green, with the women redeeming them on Thursday, Sept. 9th winning 2-0 against Oakland University at Oakland.

MSU defeated the Youngstown State Penguins in football at home, 42-14. The Spartans scored on their first play from scrimmage for the second straight week, this time it was quarterback Payton Thorne throwing a 75-yard touchdown pass to Jayden Reed to start the game. 

Monday, Sept. 6 in Ann Arbor University of Michigan men’s soccer team won 2-1 against Loyola Chicago. While men’s golf faced Island Resort Intercollegiate finishing third out of ten. On Friday, Sept. 10 the cross country teams ran at the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational at Penn State with the women finishing third out of six and the men finishing first out of six.

Michigan defeated Washington in football on Sept. 11, 31-10. Running back Blake Corum ran for three touchdowns for the Wolverines. 

Women’s soccer went to Kentucky finishing in a 1-1 tie against Louisville. Field hockey played Ball State at home winning 12-0. Women’s soccer brought home another win at home against Duke winning 3-2, while men’s soccer lost against New Hampshire 1-0 .

Back in our own territory, the Golden Grizzlies hosted MSU in women’s soccer resulting in a 2-0 loss. Women’s volleyball dominated away at University of Pennsylvania with a final score of 3-0. Women’s golf competed at Central Michigan University in the A-ga-ming Invitational finishing 2nd out of 917.
