Letter to the Editor: Disappointed in your cartoon choices

Editor’s note: The Oakland Post regrets the decision to run the “Note to Self” comic featured on last week’s “Mouthing Off” satire page. During this semester, we have covered Greek life in stories chronicling sorority bid day, Oakland’s TKE fraternity’s positive response to a national scandal, the Greek council’s reaction to the Yik Yak app, and a “Photo of the Week” featuring a Zeta Sigma Chi fundraising event. The Post has and will continue to provide objective coverage of all campus organizations and to champion their contributions to the community.

Dear Editor,

I recently read in your latest edition of the Oakland Post a very disturbing cartoon. The comic depicted a bear going to a Greek event only to be confused by seeing beer cans, implying that the bear couldn’t read the label. It is hard to grasp what the real take away from this comic is supposed to be. Is it implying that people who attend Greek events only drink and party? Is it implying that people who go to such events are illiterate or dumb? While these are damaging questions to think of, the real disturbance is the use of an actual Greek organization in the first frame.

There is a colony of Alpha Sigma Phi’s on campus who are trying to gain their charter on OU’s campus. To even remotely imply negative stereotypes on a fledgling organization is just bad writing. I suggest that you do your research. Between the stringent academic standards that the majority of Greek Orgs have and the amount of money raised for philanthropic purposes, the Greeks on campus are good role models and peers for other students.

I hope that the next cartoon to grace your pages will actually use humor instead of cheap shots to get laughs.

Sincerely,

Angelica Arens
