Letter to the Editor: Greek life cartoon

Editor’s note: The Oakland Post regrets the decision to run the “Note to Self” comic featured on last week’s “Mouthing Off” satire page. During this semester, we have covered Greek life in stories chronicling sorority bid day, Oakland’s TKE fraternity’s positive response to a national scandal, the Greek council’s reaction to the Yik Yak app, and a “Photo of the Week” featuring a Zeta Sigma Chi fundraising event. The Post has and will continue to provide objective coverage of all campus organizations and to champion their contributions to the community.

To Whom It May Concern:

I am writing in regards to the comic that was in the Oakland Post depicting a bear in an OU shirt at a party with Greek letters on a banner.  The insinuation of alcohol at a Greek event just adds to the already tainted image that people have for fraternities and sororities alike, and I was very disappointed and upset to see the comic in the paper.  The countless philanthropic acts or events that support the community are continuously overlooked as the Oakland Post chooses to focus on a stereotype rather than actual actions of the Greek life on OU’s campus.  In the future, it would be appreciated if there was a little more discretion in what cartoons are selected for the paper, as putting a wonderful organization in a negative light is very demeaning to OU extracurricular activities in general.

Thank you,

Kristina Geiger
