Letter to the Editor: Don’t live here

I’ve recently moved into Beacon Hill Apartments, which seemed like, DUH, a smart move- so close to campus and seems to be so nice too! Wrong. Upon moving in, our schedule move was pushed back a day because we were told the maintenance was having trouble getting our appliances hooked up. Then, we were told our apartment had no electricity, along with the fact that it was all finished, but we were just waiting on the inspector. Well, we drove by the apartment to check it out and they were still working on it! They were taking out drywall! I had asked previously if the apartments had been flooded and our leasing consultant had said no. The maintenance crew informed us that 46 apartments had actually been flooded.

We signed the lease anyways because we just wanted to be in. The maintenance crew had three weeks to get everything done. However, things only got worse. We walked into the apartment to find the water heater spewing everywhere. We called the office and she sent someone down right away. We had hoped that was the end of our troubles…nope. The light in our dining room didn’t work, the washer and dryer were broken, the guest bathroom shower was never cleaned, our floors were disgusting with drywall all over them, tiles were chipped and there was mold in our shower. I had emailed her a list, but I never heard anything back.

I decided to call the city and see if maybe I could get some answers. I talked to a gentleman who supposedly is the city inspector. He was very kind and patient, and tried to give me answers. He said he’d call the office and, if I wanted him to, he would come inspect it. Well of course when the property manager caught wind, she sent someone down right away. The maintenance guy was extremely considerate and informed us that it wasn’t mold, to his knowledge. We then went through the apartment and he wrote down everything that was broken and needed repair, and said someone would be by to fix it shortly.

Two weeks went by and nothing. I sent another email stating I either wanted deducted rent because $915 is way to much to live somewhere that doesn’t care about there tenants, and/or a month to month lease. That also caught the property manager’s attention. She proceeded to schedule a meeting with me and my roommate. We walked into her office hoping to get answers, but instead we were verbally attacked. She talked to us like we were 15-year-old girls and insulted us saying, “It wasn’t mold, it’s mildew and you wasted everyone’s time. Next time you call the inspector, he said he’s going to fine you because he doesn’t have time to deal with naive little girls.” Uh…wow, I was surely taken back. I would have never expected to be talked to like that. She then went on to say that she wouldn’t be threatened by us to have rent reduction or a change in the lease. I understand we signed a legal document, but this is too much. She then sent the same maintenance worker down to fix things that weren’t fix. They fixed everything, but there’s mildew in the shower, despite my efforts to clean it. I feel extremely wronged and insulted. I don’t want another student taken advantage of by this complex. Thanks for your time.
