Volleyball ends season in NCAA tourney

After capturing their first ever Horizon League regular season and tournament championships, the Golden Grizzlies fell to the Wildcats in their first game of the NCAA tournament.

A historic season for Oakland Volleyball ended Friday night in Kentucky as the 13th seeded Kentucky Wildcats proved to be too much for the Golden Grizzlies. Oakland lost in straight sets 25-20, 28-26, and 25-19. All three sets were close as Oakland even had two set points in the second set, but could not quite put Kentucky away.

Melissa Deatsch led the way for the Golden Grizzlies as she recorded 10 kills, 14 digs, and even two blocks. Despite being smaller than Kentucky, Oakland was able to register ten blocks with Sammy Condon and Amanda Baker leading the team with three each.

Despite losing in the first round, Oakland accomplished a lot this season as they posted a 22-10 and captured their first ever Division I conference regular season and tournament championships. The team also broke the school program’s longest winning streak when they won ten games in a row in October and November.
