‘I Am Not Okay with This’ features another awkward teenager with secret powers

Netflix released a show containing an awkward teen with supernatural powers, and, once again, it was a hit.

“I Am Not Okay with This” came out Wednesday, Feb. 26, and I binge-watched it all in one night. Since the episodes were each only about 20-30 minutes long, it was an easy and pleasing show to watch.

This show is a mix between “The End of the F***ing World” and “Stranger Things.” With the same vibe as “The End of the F***ing World” and a similar plot to “Stranger Things,” it didn’t feel like the most original show Netflix had ever made, but it did keep my interest the whole time

Sydney Novak (Sophia Lillis), a 17-year-old girl, realizes she has telekinetic powers, she tries to hide them from her friends Stanley Barber (Wyatt Oleff) and Dina (Sofia Bryant). Her anger and jealousy gets in the way of keeping this hidden talent a secret.

While Sydney doesn’t have the same powers as Eleven from “Stranger Things,” it is pretty close as both their noses start to bleed when they use their abilities. But when it comes to being similar to “The End of the F***ing World,” both of these shows are based on books both written by Charles Forsman — no wonder they let off the same vibe.

Once Sydney gets angry, destructive things she doesn’t mean to happen, happen, and soon her friends find out the truth.

As Stanley stands by her trying to help her control her powers, he purposely makes her mad so she can rage out and unleash her telekinetic energy. By doing so, he brings up Sydney’s dark past and her father’s suicide.

Sydney comes from a troubled home with a neglectful mother and little brother. people at school think shes a freak and whisper rumors that she and her family are the reason for their father’s suicide.

Throughout the show, Sydney and her friends have to cover up problems she has caused and clean up messes she makes. While trying to figure herself out, she tries to act like a normal teenager and go to prom, but everything just goes downhill.

This show is a quick and easy watch. With a total of about 140 minutes for the whole season, viewers will probably binge-watch it just like me.The cliffhanger at the end left me thinking about the possible results and hoping for a season 2 that will tie up the loose ends.

With the more personal connection that comes with her powers, I am very curious as to how her dad will maybe play into the story line. The episodes hint that he has a bigger part in the plot than it is shown, especially with the weird fact that he did not leave a note when he committed suicide, so many questions arise about Sydney’s father’s background.

Overall, the show kept my interest throughout all seven episodes. While the plot seems somewhat to be overplayed, the storyline was different and contained interesting aspects.

Since the series is not long nor boring, I do recommend this show to anyone and everyone. It will definitely leave you with some questions and wanting more.
