Men’s soccer hosted the University of Detroit Mercy on Saturday, Sept. 28, but outside of that match, there were no other home games since Sept. 25. Numerous teams competed across the United States over the past week, including the tennis, soccer and volleyball teams.
Women’s Soccer
The women’s soccer team traveled to Dayton to face off against Wright State for a Horizon League match on Saturday, Sept. 28. Despite out shooting Wright State 18-15, the Raiders scored four goals to Oakland’s one. The Raiders goalkeeper had seven saves to Jamie Leas and Naomi Stadelmann’s five, as the Raiders were able to get nine shots on goal.
The lone goal for the Golden Grizzlies came in the 71st minute from Sierra Grodsinsky, her first on the season. She was assisted by Elyssa Holfeld.
This was the Golden Grizzlies’ first Horizon League loss on the season, moving their record in Horizon League play to 1-1. On the season, the women’s soccer team moved to 3-5-1.
Tennis
Over the weekend, Ava Thielman competed in the Oracle ITA Masters in Malibu, California. Over the four-day competition, she competed in mixed doubles matches with Cleveland State’s Nico Mostardi, as well as singles matches. The pair of Thielman and Mostardi were able to win their first doubles match by a score of 6-3 over South Alabama’s Louic Cloes and North Carolina’s Sara Daavettila.
The next round, Thielman and Mostardi fell 6-4 to the pair of Jack Lin from Columbia and Iuliia Bryzgalova from Penn.
In the first round of singles matches, Thielman lost in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-1 to Jessica Livianu of St. John’s, which put her in the consolation draw on Saturday. In her second singles match, Thielman came out on top after falling behind in both sets 4-2. She ended up defeating Rosie Cheng of William & Mary 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).
The tennis team gets back in action on Friday, Oct. 4 as they travel to Muncie, Indiana to play in the Ball State Invitational.
Volleyball
The volleyball team played two Horizon League matches this weekend, one against Wright State and one against Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI).
On Friday, Sept. 27 the Golden Grizzlies faced off against Wright State in Dayton for their first Horizon League match of the season. The Raiders were able to win in straight sets, 3-0. The first set for the Golden Grizzlies ended in a lopsided 9-25 loss, and from then on Wright State continued to keep the pressure on. The Raiders led the game in all statistical categories, and gave Oakland their first Horizon League loss on the season.
The next day, the Golden Grizzlies headed to Indianapolis to play IUPUI. Once again, the volleyball team lost 3-0. This time, the first two sets were tightly contested, ending 24-26 and 21-25, but the Golden Grizzlies could not regain control in the third set, losing the final set 13-25. This loss to IUPUI put their Horizon League record at 0-2, and their total record at 7-7.
The volleyball team returns to the O’Rena on Friday, Oct. 4 and Saturday, Oct. 5, as they host Green Bay and the University of Illinois-Chicago in two more Horizon League matches.
