Kay Felder arrested on Domestic Violence charges

Former Oakland men’s basketball star Kay Felder was arrested on charges of domestic violence on Monday, Dec. 3 in Toronto. Felder was released by the Toronto Raptors G-League team, the 905 Raptors.

Raptors 905 issued a statement following Felder’s arrest and subsequent release.

The statement read, “On Monday, Dec. 3, 2018, Raptors 905 guard Kay Felder was charged by police in connection with an allegation of domestic violence. Raptors 905 have waived Felder, effective immediately. As this matter is before the courts, Raptors 905 will not comment further.”

Felder’s incident was made public within 72 hours of the Kareem Hunt scandal, where the Pro Bowl running back for the Kansas City Chiefs was released after a video of him beating and kicking a woman back in February in a Cleveland hotel room was released by TMZ.

TMZ was the news outlet who initially broke the Felder news as well. TMZ reported that Felder was out to dinner with a woman who he had known a long time, and “allegedly got violent and choked her, leaving nasty marks on her neck. Our sources say the alleged victim was able to call a family member who then called police.”

Felder is a graduate of Detroit Pershing High School, the same high school that former Oakland stars Martez Walker and Sherron Dorsey-Walker attended.

Felder is the 2016 Horizon League player of the year, in a season where he lead the NCAA in assists and became the all-time leader in assists for the Horizon League. He was later drafted by the Atlanta Hawks with the 54th overall pick and traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he signed a contract that guaranteed him $1 million.

After multiple ten-day and two-way contracts and a stint with the hometown Detroit Pistons in the winter of 2018, Felder received a partially guaranteed contract with the Toronto Raptors during the off-season, and was assigned to the G-League team, Raptors 905.

In his time with Raptors 905, Felder had been playing well, including hitting a game-winning shot against the Erie Bayhawks on Nov. 27. This season, he was averaging 18.1 points per game, 6.4 assists per game, 4.2 rebounds per game and 1.5 steals per game. Raptors 905 is currently on a four game win streak and has the second-best record in the G-League, only behind the Westchester Knicks.
