Letter to the editor: An apology to the rec center staff

Over the past week I have written an editorial, written an apology to said editorial, and met with the director of the Oakland University Rec Center Greg Jordan. It was not until this meeting that I realized just how mistaken I was about the information that I had when I wrote my pieces. Not only did I operate under assumptions from what I believed I was seeing, but I also failed to properly check my other sources. This resulted in an opinion that was simply wrong.

It is with this knowledge that I have no other choice, morally and/or ethically, than to retract my statement completely and again offer my sincerest apologies to the Oakland University Rec Center and its staff. I have learned a valuable lesson from Mr. Jordan on this one, but it is unacceptable to learn lessons at the expense of others and I feel the weight of my decisions.

I had no ground here. Certainly I had a right to free speech, but I had a responsibility to the Rec and Post, and I failed that responsibility. I believe it takes a human to make a mistake, and it takes a decent human to own up to them. I am trying to be decent, respectful and humble as I clearly failed to be in the first place. I would again like to conclude this apology as I did the last. By reiterating that this was never meant to be about the Rec employees or faculty but a perceived slight at a greater systemic level. I’ve never had a poor experience with the Rec employees and I believe all of them to be good, hard working people. I accept full accountability for my actions and I apologize to all of you.
