The Detroit Free Press, The New York Times, The Oakland Post — almost every news organization has them: opinion sections. Whether it is in editorials, columns, or The Post’s Mouthing Off section, newspapers bring audiences the news, but they should be able to offer opinions, too.

The Post specifically states in both Perspectives and Mouthing Off that the opinions in those sections may not reflect those of the staff of the publication.

Yes, the biggest part of our job is to report the news to Oakland University and all who read our paper. But having these opinion sections are important.

The truth is we want to bring emotions out of people. We want one of our staff’s opinions to make someone think, feel anger, happiness, agreement, etc. We want those people to go to our Web site or e-mail us comments and tell us exactly what they think.

Our Perspectives and Mouthing Off sections aren’t just for our staffers. Anyone has the freedom to write a column and send it in; it is actually encouraged. Whether you disagree with a recent column and have an educated response as to why you do, or if you have a great idea for a hilarious Mouthing Off, send us your written opinions to [email protected].
