Grizzlies hang on for narrow victory
The Oakland University men’s basketball team (16-8, 10-1) survived a scare against Western Illinois Saturday night, holding on for a 68-64 win.
With the Grizzlies leading by just a single point with under a minute to play in the game, junior guard Larry Wright buried a 3-point shot to seal the victory. After the game, head coach Greg Kampe called it the biggest shot of Wright’s career.
Wright was a perfect 5-for-5 on the evening from behind the arc, leading OU with 19 points.
Oakland never trailed in the game and at one point lead by 12 points late in the second half. But Western Illinois never went away and forced a 60-60 tie with two minutes remaining before Drew Maynard fired a critical 3-pointer to give OU a lead it would not again relinquish.
Junior Keith Benson contributed 17 points, six rebounds, and four blocks before fouling out late in the game. Senior Derick Nelson had 14 points and six rebounds of his own.
Oakland will return to action Thursday for a matchup with Centenary College. It will be the first game at the O’Rena in nearly three weeks for the Grizzlies.
