OU men’s soccer shuts out IUPUI to advance to Summit League Championship game
The Oakland University men’s soccer team won in convincing fashion Friday against IUPUI, upsetting the No. 2 seeded-Jaguars, 3-0, in the first round of the Summit League conference tournament.
“Today was all about heart and intensity; you throw game plans out the window. It just comes down to who wants it the most. It was a 3-0 game on the scoreboard but it wasn’t a 3-0 game,” OU head coach Eric Pogue said. “Until the very end, when it opened up a little bit, we had a bunch of chances, then they had a bunch of chances, game tipped one way.”
Freshman Sean Magee scored the game-winning goal, his second of the season, in the 72nd minute to put Oakland on the board first. Sophomore Johnny Dreshaj got an assist on the goal.
“We’re trying to protect our house and luckily I got the rebound and put it in, nice and easy,” Magee said. “It was just reaction and instinct. You play this game for awhile, you know your way around the field.”
OU would score another goal just two minutes later, as Magee was fouled on a shot attempt. Dreshaj took the penalty shot, putting the ball in the lower right corner of the goal. It was his third goal of the season.
Freshman Alex de Leon sealed the victory for OU with an 80-yard breakaway goal in the 86th minute.
Junior Mitch Hildebrandt recording another shutout – his eighth of the year – as the Jaguars only got off 10 shots and only two quality scoring chances. Oakland had 23 shot attempts with 10 of them on net.
Oakland’s season will continue as they play Oral Roberts at the OU Soccer Field at noon on Sunday, Nov. 14. The winner would be crowned Summit League champion and head to the NCAA College Cup.
