Another Oakland University team is headed to an NCAA Tournament as the men’s soccer team won the Summit League Tournament Sunday by defeating Oral Roberts, 2-0, at the OU Soccer Field on campus.
The third-seeded Golden Grizzlies will advance to the NCAA College Cup later this month as Sunday’s win earned them an automatic bid to the tournament — the fifth time in school-history.
“Our players were focused and at the end of the day we were successful,” head coach Eric Pogue said. “We’ve had some ups and downs this season, but ultimately we were focused on reaching this moment, the one where could be able to celebrate a championship on our home field.”
Goals from sophomore Johnny Dreshaj in the first half and Jonathan Evans in the second made the difference Sunday against fourth-seeded ORU. Assists went to Makesi Lewis and Vuk Popovic.
Goalkeeper Mitch Hildebrandt had to make just two saves to record the shutout for OU.
The Summit League title comes as somewhat of a surprise as Oakland had to win its final game of the regular season to even qualify for the conference tournament. The team went just 5-10-3.
The Grizzlies triumph Sunday serves as vindication after last season’s disappointing end, when OU entered the conference tournament, also played on campus, as the No. 1 seed and was upset in the first game.
