Not since Notre Dame did it over twenty years ago has a school won the Horizon League’s all-sports title in such overwhelming fashion. In the 1994-95 season, the Irish did it with 99 points. For the 2015-16 season, Oakland did it with 62, its second McCafferty in two years and the most points ever in the current scoring format.

It started with autumn domination, in which the Golden Grizzlies nearly swept that part of the year. Oakland won the league title in men’s and women’s cross country and soccer.

Through the winter, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, under the tutelage of Michigan Sports Hall of Fame soon-to-be-inductee Pete Hovland, did what they have been doing for the past couple of decades and each won a conference title, the 38^th consecutive for the men and the 23^rd consecutive for the women.

The women surprised in the spring with a couple of first-ever league titles in indoor track and field and golf.

“We talked at the beginning of the year with our student-athletes about being process-driven and focusing on getting our culture right…” athletic director Jeff Konya said in a Golden Grizzlies press release. “It is truly remarkable to see the strides the entire athletics enterprise has made over the last two years and I commend all our staff, coaches, and student-athletes for putting in the effort and attitude to make this unprecedented success possible.”

The Horizon League’s press release explained how scoring works:

“For the sports of men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, softball and baseball, points are awarded based on combined regular season (60 percent) and championship (40 percent) finishes.  For all other sports, points are based on performance in the League championships.”
