Women’s basketball team take down Rochester College
Oakland University’s women’s basketball team won on Thursday against the Rochester warriors in a mostly one-sided game, 74-30.
The Grizzlies started strong, preventing Rochester to score any points within the first 3 minutes of the game.
Oakland had a 9-point lead when Rochester scored their first point, which came from a free throw shot from Forward Sam Tamaschko.
Late in the game Oakland separated their lead even more with separation in the first half as much as 23 points right before the buzzer of the half.
Oakland kept the lead over the rest of the game, slowly separating the score even more than in the first half.
The Golden Grizzles never let their guard down and their lead never went lower than 25 points after the first points of the half by Oakland’s Guard Victoria Lipscomb.
The defense of Oakland within the game caused the Warriors to turnover the ball 25 times within the game, and Oakland fought hard to get 28 points from the steals.
The Golden Grizzlies bench stepped up to score 23 points within the entire game, almost matching the total score from Rochester.
“We had a lot of subs come in and get some big minutes,” Bethany Watterworth said. “They did a really good job with passing, getting the open shot and a great job with the defense.”
After taking the foot off the gas in the second half and allowing breakaways, Oakland straightened up and kept these simple mistakes to a minimum.
Watterworth had the highest points of the game scoring a total of 17 points within the 27 minutes she played in the game. She also had 5 rebounds, a block and a steal to add to the team’s strong defense.
Lipscomb had the third highest amount of points total adding a total of 11 points to the grizzles score.
“I think it was a good overall performance for the team.” Eric Stephan, Associate Head Coach said. “We just need to continue to get better. And we will get better as we get more familiarity on the court which will be key for us going forward.”
Oakland will be facing off against the Providence Friars at home on Tuesday, Nov. 22 at 6:30 p.m.
