Oakland men’s basketball scratched by Arizona Wildcats

Oakland University Golden Grizzlies (8-5) couldn’t stop Forward Soloman Hill and the rest of Arizona Wildcats (8-4) on Tuesday night, falling 85-73.

Ranked seventh in the country with a 22.0 points-per-game average, Reggie Hamilton led the game with 31 points and shot four of seven from the three-point line.

Laval Lucas-Perry, who started his collegiate career at Arizona, added ten points and five rebounds. Drew Valentine scored eight points and three rebounds.

Guard Travis Bader finished with 17 points and nailed two consecutive three-pointers early in the second half to cut the Arizona lead by two at the 17:44 mark, but shot 3-14 from the three-point arc overall.

Arizona’s sound defense held the fast-pace Oakland offense to nine of 32 from the three-point line.

Oakland came back from a 14 point deficit to bring the game within four points at the halftime, but Arizona answered in the second half bringing their lead to as much as 19 points.

The Grizzlies fell into foul trouble, both Hamilton and Valentine had four fouls, and Petros fouled out with 1:59 left in the game, allowing the Wildcats to head to the free-throw line 24 times.

In the third game without former guard Blake Cushingberry (ruled academically ineligible) and Ryan Bass (suffering from a concussion), Oakland’s depleted bench only scored six points compared to Arizona’s 17.

Veteran forward Hill led the Wildcats with 23 points and ten rebounds. Guard Kyle Fogg followed with 17 points and six rebounds.

Hamilton was announced on Monday night as the NBC National Player of Week and the Summit League Co-Player of the Week, after leading Oakland to a win from a 17 point deficit last Saturday against Valparaiso.

The Grizzlies return home to the O’rena to take on the Western Michigan Broncos on Friday, Dec. 23 at 7 p.m.
