Mid-July is already here and while the summer may seem endless in this stifling heat, the back to school season is just around the corner. Before chilly autumn breezes replace sunny summer afternoons, here are some great ways to enjoy the rest of the summer.
Ann Arbor Art Fair (July 17-20)
For the art aficionados, the Ann Arbor Art Fair is a three day extravaganza of art and culture running July 17 to July 20. Woodward Dream Cruise (August 16)
Love classic cars? Head to Birmingham for the Woodward Dream Cruise on Saturday, Aug. 16. Originally started as a fundraiser in 1995, the car show has evolved and grown into the world’s largest one day automotive event. While officially only one day, there are car parades and entertainment all weekend long. Stake out a spot on the street curb and watch the classic cars pass by on Woodward Avenue, or meander through the displays of hot rods and muscle cars.
Local concerts and shows
A more low-key event, Music in the Park is a free concert every Thursday evening in July at the Rochester Municipal Park. Don’t miss the concert series finale on July 31, showcasing the talented Rochester Symphony Orchestra.
Located on Oakland University Campus, Meadowbrook Amphitheatre is featuring several notable performing artists. On July 19, the Grammy Award-winning blues legend Buddy Guy takes the stage. A guitarist and vocalist, Buddy Guy is known for his soulful Chicago blues. Indie folk-rock band Lord Huron, formed by Michigan native Ben Schneider, performs on August 9 with their signature blend of country, rock and dreamlike storytelling.
Michigan Renaissance Festival in Holly, Mich.
If you love history, fantasy, cosplay or any combination of the three, the Michigan Renaissance Festival is the place to go. Step into the 16th century village of HollyGrove for a day of revelry and adventure. Opening Aug. 16 and running weekends into late September, the festival features themed weekends such as Highland Fling with Highland Games or Viking Invasion with axe-throwing competitions.
Enjoy brunch with the royal court while knights joust, explore the many entertainment options or browse the marketplace for unique purchases. Outside food is not allowed, instead feast on a giant turkey leg or sample a famous pickle. Step back in time to the 16th century and meander the quaint village of HollyGrove.
Michigan State Fair in Novi, Mich. (August 28-September 1)
Before the fall semester kicks off, attend the Michigan State Fair in Novi over Labor Day weekend. While this event is ticketed, the attractions are worth the price. See the circus show, with acts such as fire eating or sword swallowing. For the competitive folks, there are contests such as baking, pie-eating or hat decorating. Shop for produce at the farmers market, see giant pumpkins weighing over 1000 pounds or catch a musical performance on the main stage.
