South Dakota defeats Oakland women 64-49 Saturday at the DakotaDome

Oakland University women’s basketball fell to South Dakota 64-49 Saturday at the DakotaDome.

Sophomore guard Peyton Apsey led the Grizzlies with 12 points. Freshman guard Olivia Nash recorded a double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbing ten rebounds.

Oakland (8-11, 2-5) and South Dakota (9-10, 4-2) started the game off on the same foot, with each team scoring seven points before the first media timeout.

South Dakota went on a 7-0 run to gain the lead, 14-7 with just under 14 minutes remaining.

Oakland got back to within two points after shooting 5-12 to make the score 18-16.  Freshman guard Elena Popkey tied the game at 18 with a two-point jumper with 7:16 remaining in the first half.

The Grizzlies regained the lead for the first time since the 18-minute mark thanks to a layup from junior guard Elizabeth Hamlet.

The Coyotes jumped back out in front with 1:16 remaining after a three-point basket from sophomore guard Nicole Seekamp.

Oakland finished the first half shooting 32.4 percent, slightly better than South Dakota’s 31 percent shooting. South Dakota out rebounded Oakland 23-21.

Down by only two at halftime, Oakland looked to swing the momentum their way to begin the second half.

The score stayed close as both teams responded point for point.  South Dakota pushed to a six-point lead but a three-pointer from Apsey quickly cut it to 46-43 with 7:22 remaining.

The Coyotes kept the Grizzlies down by going on a 16-2 run in the game’s final minutes, winning 64-49.

South Dakota’s 50 percent shooting in the second half overwhelmed Oakland, who shot 33.3 percent.

Oakland finished the game with 35 rebounds while South Dakota grabbed 42 boards.

The Grizzlies end their three-game road trip in Fort Wayne, Ind., Jan. 26 at 4:30 p.m. against the Mastodons (9-11, 2-4).
