Disney Plus’ “Agatha All Along” came to an end on Oct. 30, 2024, with a two-episode finale that left fans wishing for more.
The show drew in 4.6 million viewers for Episode 8 and 3.9 million viewers for the final episode, a sharp increase from the premiere. The middle portion of “Agatha All Along” brought forth new stakes that hadn’t yet been reached.
Spoilers ahead for the second half of “Agatha All Along.”
In Episode 5 — “Darkest Hour/Wake Thy Power” — Alice solves her trauma and breaks the generational curse that haunted her family lineage. Almost immediately after, she dies while attempting to save Agatha who in turn siphons her powers.
Episode 7 — “Death’s Hand in Mine” — is currently being lauded as one of the best episodes of the series, and for good reason. The episode centered on Lillia, played by Patti LuPone, as she goes through her trial which involves her figuring out her powers and her past. The episode is jarring and puts us in Lillia’s position as she solves one of the greatest mysteries in her life. It certainly lives up to the hype.
The final two episodes were highly anticipated as the series went along but brought up more questions than answers.
The main issue fans were having while the finale started wrapping up plot lines was that not enough were resolved by the end. Several plot lines were left with no answer, such as: when and where did Rio and Agatha meet, how exactly was Nicolas made and when did Rio and Agatha start to loathe each other?
The final episode is meant to be a flash black to Agatha’s time with Nicolas but doesn’t touch on any of Rio’s relationship with either of them, which is what the basis of her character existing in the show was.
“I would say a lot of the deleted scenes are just enhancing story logic and the things that were cut because we felt like we had already covered that particular beat or we felt that the audience would get it,” showrunner Jac Schaeffer said in an interview with Collider.
Other scenes were cut due to pacing.
“There is a scene that we cut for pacing, where Alice is interviewing Mr. Kaplan, and he keeps saying Billy’s name, and she can’t hear it. She keeps trying to write it down, she can’t hear it,” Schaeffer said for The Wrap.
Some of the scenes brought up — while seemingly minuscule — would tie in important events to characters.
Alice, for example, was fired from being a cop but it is unknown to the audience why she was fired. If this scene was added, more context would’ve been given and audiences would be able to connect the dots and realize that Lillia putting the sigil on Billy could’ve been the reason Alice was fired, all before they were a team.
The show used Episode 9 as a flashback to show Agatha and Nicolas before Rio had to take him, but it could’ve used more. A qualm that seems to be common with the modern 8–9-episode season we see more now, especially with Marvel shows on Disney Plus.
Despite the debates on how the final two episodes should’ve gone, Episode 8 does bring a momentous occasion to Marvel — the first sapphic kiss in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was shared between Agatha and Rio.
The show was really well done despite having a low budget compared to the other Marvel Disney Plus shows and truly cemented Agatha and Billy into the MCU.
