In 1979, the Spartans clinched their first NCAA championship, which started his saga of becoming a basketball phenomenon. Paired with Magic Johnson, they faced Indiana State University, a team that consisted of another NBA great, Larry Bird. Kelser displayed an unforgettable performance in Michigan State’s 75-64 win, adding 19 impressive points.
He rose to the occasion when the spotlight was brightest, which solidified his legacy as a top-tier player. He shined not only on the court but in the classroom as well, being honored as a two-time Academic All-American.
Path to the NBA
Following his illustrious basketball career, Kelser took his talents to the professional stage, entered the NBA draft and was selected by the Detroit Pistons as the fourth overall pick. During his time playing professionally, he continued to exhibit his scoring prowess and versatility on the court.
