The Golden Grizzlies recently showcased an impressive performance, winning their final exhibition game against Wayne State with a score of 86-71.
The Grizzlies displayed a renewed sense of determination and made a strong impression on the defensive side from the very beginning, as Rocket Watts filled the stat sheet with early steals along with Trey Townsend blocks. With the combination of their efforts collectively, they caused Wayne State turnovers.
The first half featured Oakland having dominance, leading from start to finish. The show was all about Jack Gohlke, the shooter who was hot from 3-point range, which gave him 12 points in the first half. Oakland fans have every reason to be optimistic about Gohlke being on the team, and Kampe surely has a clear vision of his role.
“From the moment I stepped on campus, coach has been tremendous in giving me confidence and letting me know what he brought me here to do, so just kind of going out there all the time and trying to be ready at all times,” Gohlke said.
While Gohlke and Blake Lampman have similar games, both can knock down shots from long range. Lampman was able to step on the blacktop after missing the first exhibition game due to injury, showing he is back and ready to go. This was evident in his 10-point showing during the game.
Throughout the entire second half, the Grizzlies kept Wayne State at a comfortable 10-point-or-more lead, and it was all because Oakland maintained their aggressive approach. The majority of the team was able to get in on all the action. Chris Conway managed to secure points that were scored through contact.
DQ Cole also played a pivotal role in Oakalnd’s victory, showcasing his versatility with a double-double, scoring 12 points and staying on the glass, grabbing 10 rebounds. Cole has been a great asset to this team defensively.
“I’m always trying to get my hands dirty every game. I’m trying to get as many rebounds as possible in the game. I’m not afraid; we need them for our team; that’s my goal every game — to be the best rebounder that I can be and the best teammate I can be,” Cole said.
The Golden Grizzlies have dedicated themselves to constant improvement for a winning season.
“I think we saw vast improvement since we played the first exhibition game, and that doesn’t surprise me; that’s what exhibition season is about, so I was pleased with that,” Cole said. “I think we made great strides tonight and are getting better, and I think that’s what this year is about. There were a lot of good things that happened tonight, and I think it is just playing games. We just got to play.”
As the Grizzlies look forward to their second game of the regular season against Illinois at the State Farm Center on Friday, Nov. 10, at 8 p.m., their unwavering teamwork and determination promise to be the driving force behind their pursuit of victory and success this season.
