Shirelle Linzy’s story of prevailing through adversity and transforming setbacks into opportunities exemplifies the true essence of perseverance, which has led to her quick rise.
Linzy dedicates her running career to her loving mother, who passed away in 2016. Her mother’s memory is a constant source of motivation, and she feels her presence whenever she is out there on the track. She also relies on her faithful relationship with God to guide and strengthen her.
As she continued her track career, she discovered running isn’t just about winning; it’s about pushing her own limits and discovering the depths of her sense of purpose.
“I’ve always loved running; it’s something about friendly competitiveness that I have always enjoyed,” she said.
Overcoming the setback
One of the most challenging setbacks she faced was a severe shoulder injury that left it dislocated, but this setback was nothing but fuel for her fire. During the recovery process, she never gave up and remained positive while she was healing. She never lost sight of the goal and resumed training with a renewed sense of purpose and an unwavering belief in her abilities.
“I’ve already loved track and field, but this was more so like, you know what, this is something you tried to take from me, and now I am going to show you how big I can become, and the discipline just came with that. It’s a lot of things. I know where I want to be and what it is going to take for me to get there.”
Though she faced adversity, injuries and setbacks, she still learned how to draw strength and developed a reputation for her relentless work ethic.
Pursuing excellence
Linzy has set ambitious goals for her performance in the upcoming season.
“My goal for the 100 meter is 11.4, 100 hurdle goal is 13.4, 60 meter indoor goal is 7.2, and 60 meter hurdle goal is 8.3.
As a student-athlete, she is persistent in her studies and possesses an exemplary ability to achieve only the best. She is a senior on her way to graduating this upcoming April 2024 in sports psychology to help other athletes with their mental health, alongside her mental health podcast to spread awareness, with a goal to graduate with a 4.0.
Finding the perfect fit
Linzy knew Oakland was the school for her.
“I chose Oakland because of the progression. The sprinters were not complacent; everyone supported one another, and everyone is 100 percent all in,” Linzy said. “This is where I want to be; this is peace for me. Michigan is a fresh start; it’s a new environment for me. It’s one of those things I don’t take for granted; I take the most out of everything.”
She transformed every obstacle into an opportunity to fuel her rise to greatness.
She has proven anybody can achieve greatness no matter the hurdles they face, and she is determined to inspire others to do the same. Shirelle Linzy is ready to break barriers and exceed her own limitations.
Oakland will compete in many events leading up to the Horizon League Championships in early May.
