Women’s basketball wins 60-46 as regular season opener looms
With the season opener set to kick off on Nov. 9 at Indiana, the Oakland University women’s basketball team came away with a 60-46 win against Windsor on Sunday. Led by three players in double figures Kim Bee (14 points), Olivia Nash (16 points), and Amy Carlton (16 points), the Grizzlies played with solid guard play as well as strong second half defense.
Windsor led 31-28 at the half, shooting 48 percent from the field. OU sophomore Olivia Nash led the Grizzlies with 11 first half points.
The game was a tale of two halves, as OU came out in the second and played relentless defense, with 24 points coming off of 23 turnovers, including 16 steals.
Oakland began the second half on a 15-2 run and never looked back. OU redshirt senior Kim Bee had her way in the post, recording a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds with nine of those boards coming in the second half.
The Grizzlies had been playing short-handed, but really came out with a lot of energy on both ends of the court and the effort really pleased OU head coach Jeff Tungate.
“This is the third time all season we’ve been able to actually play five-on-five full court,” Tungate said. “So to come out and play a team as good as Windsor, that’s won 27 games in a row and is three-time defending Canadian national champions, that started four seniors in their lineup, for us to come out and have that kind of performance and battle back from behind, I think it’s a great testimony to the type of team we have.”
The win was truly a well-rounded team effort, as the Grizzlies came into play with only seven active players due to injuries. All seven were forced to play significant minutes to compensate for the lack of depth.
“When you play seven players, there aren’t going to be many complaining about playing time, but everybody contributed tonight and I thought our defense did a tremendous job,” Tungate said.
Women’s basketball will officially begin the 2013-14 season in Bloomington, Ind. when they will take on the Hoosiers Nov. 9 in Assembly Hall starting at 7 p.m.
