Men’s basketball gets first Horizon League win
Oakland University got 24 points from senior Duke Mondy as the Golden Grizzlies (6-11, 1-1) defeated the Valparaiso Crusaders (9-8, 1-1) 75-70, in comeback fashion on Saturday, Jan. 4.
OU overcame a 15-point deficit in the second half, jump-started by 3-pointers from Duke Mondy and Travis Bader as the team went on a 19-5 run.
“Valpo was the better team for most of the game, and Bader said enough is enough,” Grizzly head coach Greg Kampe said.
Mondy’s 24 points were a game-high, while guard LaVonte Dority led Valpo with 20, one of five Crusaders to score in double figures.
Oakland trailed 44-33 at halftime and Grizzly assistant coach Saddi Washington made a halftime speech to the players that helped them in their second half rally.
“If I could give game balls out, I’d give one to Tommie (McCune), Mondy, Coach Washington and Bader,” Kampe said. “Everyone says this is a players program, and those players made plays.”
